VALPROIC ACID
Drug Treatments for Facial Neuralgias

Trade names include Depakote, Depakene, Valproate, Valrelease.

An anticonvulsant.

Valproic acid is a fairly new drug. It has previously been used for epilepsy and migraines. Its use for TN appears to be experimental.

Valproic acid may harm the liver or impair the functioning of the liver as a side effect. Its use should thus be closely monitored by a doctor.

Mixed experiences

"It decreased the intervals from every 1 1/2 to 3 minutes, up to every 6 minutes, but still with almost constant pain both day and night..... However, I have had no side effects from this new drug other than a little sleepiness and an alteration in my thinking processes that is quite different from the Tegretol effects." "Flash".
