ACYCLOVIR
Alternative Treatments for Facial Neuralgias

Disclaimer.

Brand name Zovirax.

Acyclovir is an anti-viral drug which has proven effective against the herpes viruses. In cream form, it is often used to treat cold sores. Acyclovir is used for treating shingles and can minimize postherpetic pain if given immediately as an infusion over a period of days; this requires hospitalization.  Acyclovir is also available in oral form (800 mg x 5 / day) for the treatment of herpes zoster.

Informal information

Positive experiences

"The doctor prescribed the medication normally used to treat herpes zoster (i.e. acyclovir 800mg x 5 / day). After five days of this regimen, the severe pain was gone. It seems that a two-week course of this medication is more effective - I've stopped taking it after one week and the pain started up again." -  Anonymous.

"Each time, if I take large doses of zovirax, the pain is stopped." - Anonymous.
